Isolation of the elderly: the Little Brothers are looking for volunteers for Christmas
When engagement rhymes with solidarity spirit of Christmas
The Little Brothers rally at the end of the year for Christmas is a warm moment for all. Celebrate Christmas with the Little Brothers is support, exchange and share with those who need it most. It's a gift that is priceless: a little time to help older people feel less alone ...
While loneliness has been declared "great national cause," Christmas is the time when the loneliness and isolation are most severely felt by the elderly. Particularly involved in this Christmas season, volunteers from Little Brothers accompany the poor and share with them moments of joy and conviviality.
Around a Christmas dinner or during a home visit on 24 and 25 December, the Little Brothers working to recreate an atmosphere that allows people together to break their isolation.
Again this year, the Little Brothers volunteers will actively seek to strengthen their action:
- Assist in the preparation, and participate in a potluck Christmas (24 and 25 December);
- Drive the guests for Christmas dinner group and then escort them home;
- Visit and / or share a meal at the home of an elderly person who can not or do not want to leave 24 to December 25.
Parents, children, young and old, volunteers may be mobilized with family and friends to decide to share this moment with the most isolated. In 2010, more than 5,700 volunteers contributed their time and almost 17 000 people (15% more than in 2009) have also, enjoyed the warmth of Christmas. Encouraging figures which are unfortunately not forget the urgency of the situation. Today, 16% are over 60 years in isolation purpose, a percentage that rises to 25% for over 75 years with loss of autonomy (Source: Fondation de France).
The actions are part of Christmas in the daily of Little Brothers. Today there are 9,000 volunteers to be involved and engaged with older people in difficulty at age 50. Through their network, field crews and the public's generosity, the Little Brothers are working every day to support those who suffer from isolation and have few resources, creating a relationship with them from person to person in confidence and duration. Through their association project "With the poor, to live the brotherhood," the Little Brothers are committed to supporting citizens who want a team, to recreate the link in their neighborhood, town or village with the elderly alone in precarious or seriously ill.
